I was fortunate
enough to be part of The White House Easter Egg Roll, doing a healthy-food cooking demo for kids, an endeavor I originally thought was "pretty cool," but hardly realized how AWESOME it was going to be.

For one, I figured I'd maybe get a glimpse of Obama, just a glimpse. Instead, I was within feet of the First Family as they greeted the thousands of guests to their lawn and kicked off the Easter Egg Roll. It was actually one of the coolest experiences, I mean they were just so warm, nice, funny. At one point, the mic wasn't working and Prez Obama started talking into the bunny's ear, using it as a mic, I mean the kids we're loving that! When Fergie sang The Star Spangled banner standing in the middle of them, it sent shivers down my spine. Sasha and Malia are absolute gems. I don't care if I sound over-the-top, I'm totally nuts over this family!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid6fPA1sSbvY0oIWJXM5PhGttcGJeQcM7mZprFIUbS6IA_Sv4-123IEA9lHTCzr2q4XIKRT5P3uaRN01lRt4304kW-gSTRGHCkOfcFk3BsayQQkiqUMle8_Z8JFpbNg0nGsQmqB23_Jja3/s200/kidskitchenwh" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324941989732511074" />

My cooking demo, if I may say so myself, went amazing. What a great idea to incorporate healthy cooking tips during the day so people can take some practical tips home with them on how to cook for their family. The kids weren't all that interested in my theories on avocados- and who could blame them. After all, I might be Spike, but they longed for The Easter Bunny! The best part was the helpers I got to come on stage and cook with me - classic funny kids moments. We made turkey burgers, recipe from the restaurant, and I think the kids loved mushing up avocado and playing (making patties) with the ground turkey. At one demo I had two kids who considered themselves "pros" and I was thinking of signing them up for the restaurant, if only they were older than eight!

Throughout the day Fergie-Ferg-Fergalicious was performing at the other end of the
lawn, Art Smith was kickin' around, Ziggy Marley was making the rounds - it was a huge honor being in such good company. Definitely a major PINCH ME day.

Now, back to reality where I'm flipping Obama burgers instead of possibly high-fiveing with the man himself. Oh, have I mentioned how much I like him?

Lovn' the White House,
SpikeGood Stuff Eateryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14062333273732158462noreply@blogger.com19tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6733027520671473889.post-80012186377677102302009-04-03T08:38:00.000-07:002009-04-15T08:54:38.137-07:00BEST CHEFS PARTY<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgstGvV1BZi0qPvmSIK6mJYlktwK-gNKU3AXK0L_1MY2flRJ_1pxShWPKxgE_6WCaR5TBw7UaJi2EIXsrA1YWIjwVHs9muvtxXSoVyoywZdjRJD5X1ux5LSmO9fjrkZ22PMPyBnQdMM7nWM/s200/Best+New+Chefs+on+Stage.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324947151216680946" />

Food & Wine Party... Ok there is not one word above that I don't absolutely LOVE (Food. Wine. Party.). So, you can imagine how much fun I had at this year's
Best Chefs of '09 Bash, given by Food n Wine Magazine in NYC.

I Amtrak'ed it down for the night, and had a blast reconnecting with old friends, and picking the brains of some new chefs that I've always wanted to meet. Late night I met up with Andrew (my Top Chef partner in crime) at The Spotted Pig. He was his usual boring self... a total snooze. Haha, AS IF. But first - the party and my line skipping photos..i was caught!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 156px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPXRmLuyEh4x14qOsn__dEK8EDfpZ1ZIS_eDjDHBdoSUgCnOeKh2Y0L1kUYIRTvb5AAQi476jyDnLDCnnkYIxDJLmXYTP-XtFcLWZZcu_5ibnDOSLhEbSKT6hVo5Ep3tlFkrj2eZPNrSdJ/s200/t_Spike+Line+Skipper.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5324946577481872130" />

My favorite person there? Probably a tie between Gail Simmons (she's SO nice and SO beautiful) and Josh Ozersky (he writes The Feedbag Blog, a total genius and absolute trip). I'd be lying if I didn't get all excited over chillin' with Katy Lee Joel, doing our restaurant talk thing! Tom Colicchio, was on crutches but still the coolest dude in the house. Also Nikki Cascone was there - she's an incredible person and a close friend. I hope everyone visits her at 24PRINCE in NYC (promise?). Oh, least I forget the biggest trip of all - FABIO was making the rounds, complete with his bombshell wife and big, bright smile. He's a real ham, that one, but I honestly can't say I don't like the guy.

After catching up with everyone, I walked around with some friends, sampled some stellar food and some not so stellar food. Stephanie Izzard's scallops were the star of the night. Yeah, yeah, insert the scallop jokes here.

Scott Conant served some delish TK from Scarpetta. I'm really impressed by him in general, nice guy, super-talented chef (but you don't need ME to tell you that, just
read The New York Times). I saw Harold from Top Chef, who's a perfectly nice guy, but sooooo shy - he needs to live it up more! Chefs are the new Rockstars, yo!!

We danced for a while, getting down n dirty with god-knows-who, at one point I think Rocco DiSpirito was trying to grind with me. That's probably when I realized it was time to take off. I hung out with some peeps at Nobu and then my bud Nick and I proceeded to party on with Andrew at The Spotted Pig where I will shamelessly admit, there was some sort of cat fight over me and Andrew. Meow! And we'll end there!

Love 'n cat fights,
SpikeGood Stuff Eateryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14062333273732158462noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6733027520671473889.post-19031973947482363022009-03-13T14:33:00.000-07:002009-03-13T14:49:33.556-07:00BURGER BASH KING OF IT ALL!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 172px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh56_FcvG1sA3-s593pk1sLUgaQQ2ufWuNnvdFuN14cYOc0zg1Ks_eaA9DWPVqltAveHvNL2SM0KSOD8BqL4KBaSwnk4h9gE2ca-LekhTB-4_zYq-7Yc1SDdVWlYdyQGzhbeJYPzksBoKao/s200/rachaelray.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5312792205316812658" />
Hey Guys!
I’m just coming down from the ridiculous, incredible, amazing high of South Beach Food and Wine Festival, and I’m back on my feet to tell you all about it.
In a nutshell: I kicked Bobby Flays...you know what. Haha, just kidding.
Well, actually, I’m not kidding at all, but I guess I should be a little more diplomatic about it, I kicked 23 chefs out of running for best burger!

The main reason I decided to go down to Miami was to compete in Rachael Ray’s Burger Bash. I know it sounds corny, but the event is a big deal in the food world and so I thought, let's have some fun and see what it's all about. Former winners include Chef Katie Lee Joel, as well as my pal Chef Michael Schlow of Boston. That said, I honestly went for fun, not for victory. I hoped to win, of course, but come on, not only was I the youngest chef there, but it was my first time on the playground, ya know?

So I dragged my culinary partner in crime, Chef Michael Colletti, as well as my friend from NYC Chef Sean Scotese, along with a few other members of the Spike posse down to South Beach for a weekend of Burger flippin’ and party hopping.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 190px; height: 190px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipWLfej7RWtbApLa2H7Pebxrnzk9MYc_z91MAFUMe1x3us7jCaCygDRvozoGYPOma_tSUzRk9ABqP4_vLLrjXKjjsxSILZQlUQbxdqySyc8v3gNlhbzPTqOp-5ylQLfILgDLhkfArcFNpc/s200/heinz.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5312792285161081730" />

Burger Bash was the first event of the trip - and let me tell you, what happened that night, set us off for a wild ride. A few months prior, I had decided we would serve Colletti’s Smokehouse Burger (Vidalia onion rings, chipotle bbq sauce, cheddar cheese and my famous burger blend) with a Toasted Marshmallow Shake on the side.

While the rest of Miami tanned and tequilla’ed, the boyz and I spent the entire day in the kitchen prepping like maniacs. That’s where I started getting this crazy feeling we could actually win something, there's 4 awards: Heinz Best Dressed Award, Judges Favorite, People's Choice and Best Potato.

As sun began to set, we set up our booth, surrounded by serious food stands like Morimoto, Michael Psakalis and the ubiquitous Bobby Flay, and before I knew it, Burger Bash had begun. Within seconds, tons of foodies, fans, critics and competitors were downing my food and begging for more.

The nonstop action is one big blur. We had two girls in fedora's handing out food and buttons that said "Vote Spike". I was covered in grease, marshmallows, business cards and beer, moving so fast I barely processed when Rachael Ray French-kissed me for making such a brilliant burger. Yes, that’s a fact, there are pictures. Haha!

Before I knew it, there she was again, but this time on stage. It was time to announce the winner. Wow, wouldn’t that be cool...I thought.

Well, be careful what you wish for because suddenly I heard: SPIKE MENDELSOHN. What??? WAIT, WHAT??? What had I won? Something about "Heinz" and "Best Dressed" I
jumped on stage, psyched that I had won something, at least.

But then, before I could blink, it was announced that I won something else!!!Judges Choice for Best Burger was mine too!!! And just when things couldn’t get better, Rachael Ray (you can't just call her Rachael) awarded me with the best honor of all- PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD FOR BEST BURGER.

Hundreds of people had voted and they chose my food as their absolute favorite. OMG. I was floored. So floored that when she declared me the King of Burger Bash, I basically froze on stage! Yes me, Spike, speechless. Hahah! It was so cool, guys. I wish everyone I’ve ever known could have been there.

We all accepted the prizes and accolades and I gave a huge THANKS to my crew, everyone in a state of disbelief. Not only had I won the respect of my peers, but also a trip to Amsterdam (!!) amongst other extravagant prizes.

I felt so proud of Good Stuff Eatery, I’ll never forget it. After all the screaming and pictures and press, we somehow found our way to a big bottle of Champagne on the rooftop of Rachael Ray’s penthouse suite. And the rest is...off the record!

Burger Bash King,
SpikeGood Stuff Eateryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14062333273732158462noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6733027520671473889.post-48478883873240725472009-02-01T15:01:00.000-08:002009-02-03T09:02:21.220-08:00They Aren't Joking When They Say Early Morning Show<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 187px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjENvgboJBcllLiXGJLBRpjGhG0CjhUtM0GBM3B_PIn_hKQyjQp9mhG1_v_nMlmjsUlxI3UZ6d72__Kyyij8QkzlgG5NikZYOfDL-p-iDqvMXGl0HxpW_aPFpB4bue4Piqmow2bQXsVL-GC/s200/amd_early-show.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5297969596507831762" />
guest blog by CBS, well I basically cut and pasted what the kind people at CBS said.

I did have to get up at 5:30 am...it was worth it! The DJ - DJ Butta-was off the chain! People were dancing till 2am, eating, drinking and just overall enjoying the moment. Even tho blogging is a blast… and I get far less dirty doing it! So where do I begin. From now until Wednesday, here’s a small taste of the insanity, otherwise known as my to-do list:

1- Feed the billions of hungry, Obama fans who will be walking by Good Stuff, or intentionally stopping by thanks to all the buzz circling around town. We extended our hours, edited our menu and are ready to rock ‘n roll. Actually, BA'RACK 'n roll. The customer energy is incredible, my staff is all pumped up, and honestly the fun hasn’t even begun!

2- My life is 90% chaotic kitchen, 10% red carpet. If I can manage to escape Good Stuff, and I’m not sure I”ll even want to, I’ve got a few awesome events lined up. There’s a “Declare Yourself” party hosted by Jessica Alba…yeah, I know..speaking of sizzling! And also Maroon Five is playing and a bunch of other people that I should recognize but don’t. The dress code is “celebrity-chic” which means, well, I have no clue. Thank god for the nosy women in my life - my wardrobe is one thing I don’t mind them controlling! After that we’re all going to strip down to our PJs and hit the Obama Pajama Party, which sounds sweeeeeet for two reasons - I get to wear my favorite ‘jammies, AND Marisa Tomei will be there in hers. Need I go on?

3- In the middle of all this, I’m shooting a bunch of TV shows, morning shows and such. I’m afraid to jinx myself and say the names yet. But let me just say- they are BIG. And, they are EARLY. Where’s my espresso, Katie Couric?!

4- Let’s just add a paragraph for all the people I know heading to DC this weekend! I wouldn’t change it for the world but I’m literally running out of seconds in the day! Hopefully everyone will understand when I give them a delicious burger, a juicy kiss, and then…. peace out.

5- The grand finale is my BURGER BALL on Tuesday night. Forget the tuxes and the pretentious schmoozing, I’m all about a night of FUN to celebrate this sensational moment in history. You know me, I’m laid-back, so I created a celebration that’s more about good people and great vibes, not the uptight, upscale stuff. I’ve heard Constantine from American Idol is coming and something about The Counting Crows, but I leave that to my PR peeps. All I know is that surviving this week, not to mention the Inauguration of the most inspiring man alive, gives me plenty of reason to revel in pure, uncensored, unrehearsed, forever awesomeness.

Gotta get back to the kitchen.

Love n Bacon,
Spike
Good Stuff Eateryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14062333273732158462noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6733027520671473889.post-1455501804997972582009-01-03T10:46:00.000-08:002009-01-03T10:50:47.927-08:00CHEF SPIKE'S BURGER BALL

Come to the most fun ball of inauguration night – jeans highly recommended

Tuesday January 20th, 2009
8pm, $99 a ticket.

This is for the hip crowd that doesn’t want to buy a ball gown or rent a tux but wants to celebrate Obama’s swearing-in with 8 different handcrafted mini burgers, mini handcut fries with a selection of mayo’s, mini shakes (don’t worry the toasted marshmallow shake is on the list) and farm fresh salads. It’s kind-of a Mendelsohn family tradition to chow down with our key people and get all sappy, sentimental and thankful right around now. So the guys and I used some down-time during the day to make: bone marrow, roasted and basted garlic and rosemary filet, beet salad with goat cheese and mint, cauliflower ala gratin….the menu was endless (and incredible). It wasn’t supposed to be such a big deal, but by the time my folks arrived at 10pm, we had prepared the feast of all feasts. It was so awesome looking around and seeing everyone enjoying themselves, getting served instead of serving others, taking time to smell the roses, or in this case, the crispy bacon-wrapped-asparagus. I was really moved by my surroundings. And then I was stuffed.
Today, Good Stuff closes a little early so everyone can head home for the holidays. My plan? Home for a quick nap, or maybe I’ll finish Before the Devil Knows Your Dead. Great flick, eh? Then my girlfriend and I will head to my sister’s for…yup, more food and family. Last I checked, my sis was going with a French theme (quiches, tartines, etc.). As of now, I’m showing up…empty handed. Classic. Maybe I’ll whip up some Croque Madame for all the beautiful mademoiselles in my life. Either way, I’ll make sure to have have=2 0un peu de champagne - because I truly have so much to celebrate. Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday. Were you naughty or nice?
Laughter and Eggnog Lattes,
SpikeGood Stuff Eateryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14062333273732158462noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6733027520671473889.post-24366215596679225442008-12-23T07:52:00.000-08:002008-12-23T08:07:24.856-08:00LATKE-MANIA....GREWISH STYLE!
So….I survived Latke Mania! Barely! What started as a small cooking demo for “about 80 people” turned into an 600 person pow-wow. I’m not complaining-Can’t even tell you how flattered I was that everyone opted to spend their first night of Channukah with a Greek Jew who hasn’t had time for a hair cut or shave, let alone properly practice his candle-lighting prayers.

I’m lucky because I don’t get nervous in front of crowds. I didn’t have cold feet. I didn’t get performance anxiety. I was simply: psyched. I knew I’d be bringing my mom up on stage as my “sous-chef” and sounding board. Gotta say, she really sparkled up there. We loved talking about food and family with the crowd. It was actually an awesome moment together that I’ll never forget. (See, I’m not so arrogant, which is basically how they introduced me, LOL).

The cooking went beautifully, we tried to teach some culinary tricks, etc… The audience was a little intense about the kosher vs non kosher ingredients! I mean, we kept it “kosher style,” but come on, I was on Top Chef, not Top Rabbi. I will admit that neither of us realized Jello was such a no-no. Oooops.

So here’s what we made:
Sweet Potato Latkes
Zucchini Greek-inspired Latkes
Traditional Classic Latkes
Classic Apple Sauce
Mango Apple Sauce
Tzatziki Sauce

The sweet potato latkes were my favorite, not including the Tzatziki sauce (Tzatziki is my crack!!!).

The hundreds of latke-lovers and I went downstairs after the demo so everyone could get fed. It wasn't a lot but with so many everyone just got just a bite of latke heaven! It was really cool and refreshing meeting this new crowd of DC-ers. I spend so much time in the kitchen, I don’t get to kibitz too much these days! My mom, the belle of the ball, ended up inviting a few of the staffers over to my parents’ place, so we wound up eating, laughing and enjoying the good, kosher karma over there.

Today I’m a little latke’d out, but just when I was ready to return to my busy, stressful, not-as-mch-spirit-as-I-would-like life, my candles were…. rekindled, if you will. I walked into Good Stuff and saw dozens of people from the latke demo.
